FYW Blog Week 11: Response to We're the Millers

Although I have never seen We’re the Millers, I have heard it is very funny. After watching those scenes, I think that has been confirmed. It seems as if every theory of humor is utilized throughout the movie, and that usually makes for a funny film. All the scenes are even funnier after being put in context, once I read that they aren’t a real family and they were struggling drugs back from Mexico. The concept itself is incongruous, and pretty humorous as well. Out of the scenes in that video, I’d have to say my favorite is the campfire scene when they are playing pictionary, especially after reading that the other people there were a random family. Rose’s guesses are so off-kilter and inappropriate, I can’t imagine what the other family was thinking after everyone realizes it was just supposed be a skateboard. I can relate though, because my drawing skills are absolutely horrible. No one would know I was trying to draw a skateboard either. This scene is a solid depiction of the incongruity theory, because Rose’s guesses and the whole family campfire game don’t totally go hand in hand. It also incorporates the superiority theory because of the whole poor drawing and poor guesses thing. I also really enjoyed the first scene, where Brad has the bag on his head and is being escorted by the two huge security guards. His sarcastic and easy going attitude along with the receptionist’s lack of a response to the situation, despite a seemingly hostile situation, definitely garners a few laughs. Yet again, the incongruity theory doesn’t fail to succeed in providing humor. This movie seems to have done a great job of utilizing all the different theories, maximizing the humor and appealing to all different senses of humor. After seeing those scenes, I may have to go watch the full thing now.

  1. I never watched the movie either. I agree with what you said about the scene with the receptionist. The way that everyone in the scene is treating the situation so casually is hilarious.

  2. I think you are right that it's pure incongruity humor in this one, or at least as pure as can be. The central concept is so incongruous that it just makes every little thing funnier. and I guess that's maybe why the other kinds of comedy seem amplified in comparison.
